You may be wondering why does a museum need a new gallery after just 6 years, well read on to discover more.
Why a new gallery?
Well the short answer is, our current gallery as amazing as it is to look at, isn’t fit for purpose. There isn’t just one reason why we NEED to replace our gallery, there are several significant reasons for undertaking such a large scale project so short into our existence.
Our cabinets should be no more than 40% humidity and the solution that was delivered during the build is failing to achieve that. In fact some specimens have had to be removed from display to conserve them with some cabinets reading more than 60% on certain days.
Our current display cabinets do not permit rearrangement, our displays are fixed in place. This limits how much we can adapt and improve what is on show without investing large amounts of money in new floor cabinets. With new finds and discoveries being made, it’s important to us we can change our gallery to tell our story in the best way we can.
Our current displays are incredibly difficult to access, maybe even hazardess. The current fixtures although attractive to look at, have been designed in a way that limits accessibility, opening the display is impractical, the glass fronts are very heavy. This again limits our ability to update our displays but also reduces our capabilities to make specimens accessible for scientific study. With so many new-to-science specimens this is a massive detriment to everything we have to offer.
Space, a new redesigned gallery will allow us to fit out more of our amazing specimens.
What it may look like?
It will remain very similar to what we have at present. The projectors and CGI are staying, the interpretation is remaining in the same style, some will be identical.
The glass cabinets will now be vertical however the display will still remain slanted.
The Touchscreen TV’s will be removed and replaced with smaller fixed interactive screens. This allows us to have more display space, while keeping the interactive features, It may even allow us to invest in some extra interactive material.
Some fossils will move, some won’t, but a whole host of new amazing things will appear and we are sure you will be trilled to see them.
When it may happen?
This year, our aim is to open 2024 in style with a new gallery, new media, new leaflets and massive congratulations to everyone involved.
